There’s been a lot of discussion going around lately about Para- Unity. There’s many who don’t like this word, or the meaning.
uni·ty
Function:noun
1 a: the quality or state of not being multiple : oneness b (1): a definite amount taken as one or for which 1 is made to stand in calculation
(2): identity element
2 a: a condition of harmony : accord b: continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action)
3 a: the quality or state of being made one : unification b: a combination or ordering of parts in a literary or artistic production that constitutes a whole or promotes an undivided total effect; also : the resulting singleness of effect or symmetry and consistency of style and character
So, what I’m seeing is that people who may have had good intentions in the beginning are not getting very far using this term. Instead of creating what they hoped for, the term used is driving a wedge right down the middle of the paranormal field.
Since you’re a member of this site, you must have noticed that I gave it the name of Southern Paranormal United. I did this intentionally. Unity, and United are two different words with two different meanings.
The adj for unity is:
u·nit·ed
1. Combined into a single entity.
2. Concerned with, produced by, or resulting from mutual action.
3. Being in harmony; agreed.
A blog was posted on a site today that although I respected the opinions, and agreed with some of what was being said, there were a couple items that I didn’t quite agree with, so I posted a reply. I was afraid that I might actually take a beating over the head from someone toting a bat, (no, not you, Debi lol) but instead, so far, the opposite happened. I was thanked for my words from someone who used the term ‘unity’ and seemed to be in a battle with others over it. In fact, this person asked if they could use my post on their site. So, I decided to share my post with y’all. Most of my reply follows.

I’m not keeping up with the whole unity movement, but I will say that being UNITED is not such a bad thing. I don’t use the tern ‘unity’ myself, I prefer the adjective, ‘united.’ I’m not an idiot, nor living in some fantasy world of my own creation, but yes, I believe groups can be united in respect of the single goal. I’m an individual within a group of people because of our similarities, meaning we all are searching for the same answers. A group of people, small or large, can be united and still have their own thoughts, ideas, make decisions, and still work together toward the common goal. There can and should be discussion and debate to help reach that goal.
I think of the paranormal field as a huge company, and embedded within that company is many divisions, but each division is all working toward the same thing, each one is looking for the same answers. They may go about it differently, but the reward is the same. The big boss is the paranormal community at large, meaning no one can dictate to the other what they should think. Opinions, suggestions, alternatives can be offered and be used if wished by the individual divisions. Each unit has many brains intertwined which make up the whole of the community, therefor, many thoughts, decisions, opinions, beliefs, etc… . Of course there’s going to be some problems, there’s going to be disagreements, there’s going to be debates, but that is how we grow as people, as individuals, as groups, and as a whole.
The term united does not mean robots all playing follow the leader, nor does it mean that one is better then the other, or that one is more intelligent then the other.
What it means is what the definition above states:
Combined - groups which make up the paranormal field as a whole.
Harmony - working together respectively for the common goal.
Mutual action - directed and received by each toward the other; reciprocal: mutual respect.
As anyone can probably tell, I am a huge believer in respect. A small word, but a word with a big meaning.
Now, I do not believe in this company of ours called the paranormal field having a board of trustees to dictate to any of the divisions. That is not the right way to go about achieving being united. However, each individual group could and should work together. Some of the egos in this field have got to go. There is no one out there better than myself, and I am no better than anyone else when it comes to this field. Not a one of us are ‘experts’ on the paranormal. There’s no such thing in this field. Some may have more knowledge on a certain subject, but if they shared that knowledge with everyone else respectively, then everyone would be on the same level on that subject. The individual may not agree with what they offer, but it was offered, and it’s up to the person to use or accept it.
Does my thoughts on all this mean it will happen, and we’ll be one big, perfect, respectful, loving community? I highly doubt it, there are some who are just too damn stubborn in their ways of thinking and won’t allow themselves to think out side the norm. But does it mean we as individuals , as groups, should work toward that goal for the common good of all? My opinion is yes, we should.
This was written with respect to every single one of you and your opinions, whether you agree with anything I’ve said or not, that’s okay, too. It’s just my own opinion of what I believe, and what I would like to see occur.
